About family day care

Sending your child to childcare can be a big decision for families, so you want to make sure you get it right.

Family day care offers children the same opportunity as day care centres to socialise with other children, and it may be more flexible.

How does family day care work?

Family day care is care that is typically home-based within the home of your educator to a small number of children, which many families often prefer. The ratio of carer to children preschool age and younger is one to four.

In what areas is family day care available?

Our family day care educators are available in the Wyndham, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Geelong and Surf Coast areas.

How much does family day care cost?

Fees for family day care vary according to location, the educator’s qualifications and the hours of care. However, the typical fee range is $8.50-$14 per standard hour of care with higher rates public holidays or non-standard hours care.

Some educators provide food, nappies and transport, and these are at an additional cost.

Will I receive the Child Care Subsidy if I use family day care?

Yes, the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is available when using family day care.
To register for CCS, please contact the Centrelink on 136 150. Find out more about the CCS on the Department of Human Services website.
